The project Evaluation

To develop and initiate my project proposal I went through quite a lot of stages of changing my mind to artistic block. My final proposal did however stem from the initial idea of portraits of dark skin women. The first concept I had was to reference fine art pieces and then use them as reference for portraits but my heart was not in it. I then decided to come up with a concept where I’d photograph my friends, portraits of them essentially and then link it to my mental health, but again my heart was not on it. I took a slight mental break and came back to a final concept which stemmed from the idea of me…self portraits. At first I was a it hesitant to create outcomes for this because I was insecure but I outgrew that mentality and took off with it. In regards to critical and contextual perspectives used, I used my own personal experiences such as my life essentially to lay a foundation for this project, my 12 years of depression.

I kept the same research that I had used from the first proposal as I did genuinely enjoy them and show meaning at to all potential proposals. As I begun to evaluate each piece at a time as well as evaluate them I was able to come up with a more concise idea for each portrait as they became more clearer in meaning. I’d like to say “research had a big impact on my art” but that’s not the case. No artist was “beneficial” to me in a way where I used them for a source of inspiration or implicated their work into mine. That’s just not true. A lot of my art is original from me, I took the photo and then edited it, but what I will say is when researching certain artists I was able to see other perspectives onto how they implicate their mental health into their art or social problems and how I can do something similarly l, whether I edit the images to make them darker and bigger contrast or the opposite, how do I convey how I’m feeling.

Methods used to explore my project where based upon different cameras and how I chose to take the photo in regards to photo settings like shutter speed and exposure etc. I also went about juxtaposing the images with colour the colour selection such as bright contrast to my colours chosen or dark high contrast images for instance. When speaking in specialist skills it revolves around the use of shutter speed. I’m self taught and so the skills used were just me exploring the effects that I can take on my camera and then bring to my images in post production.

I did encounter some problems and that was on the grounds of being self taught, in some images which I thought were perfect in regards to shutter speed could not be used as the composition was not on a great angle. It felt of par with the others. In order to fix these issues I did retake some images, rescale and crop. Some images that I edited did not nice edits amongst them and so at times, in order to solve this I would re edit the image a week later with fresh eyes and a fresh pallet which would enable success.

I did struggle completely to plan my time successfully for part three. Working 42 plus hours a week completely put my course success at steak. I could never find a healthy balance. Even when I begun my action plan I felt like I was not fully embracing it and wouldn’t be able to as it would just be impossible at ties to get everything done. Sometimes I would have to at times not do anything for a week because I was is drained from having to work and attend uni or do university work at the same time.

Looking back on reflections it did help me to see my vision better in my developments for my photography. I would have to look over ways on how I would refine my portraits and take breaks at times to make sure I wasn’t repeating what I was creating.

The one breakthrough that I could list would be my first portrait as that is where I finally realised what my project would finally succomb too, additional I had a style created which felt really special and so I felt joy in knowing that I had something beautiful being published.

The most successful was completing the large body of work I had wished to doom the least successful was being able to find the time whilst working full time, it felt like time was always against me. Additionally being able to communicate my work physically as well felt like such a let down on my behalf.

I did manage to present my work digitally and physically when I printed them out on a3 which did feel beautiful in a way as I finally got to see my work of the screen but I never got to being it further, I couldn’t make the book I wanted/zine. But it did feel nice to see to printed gallery style.

I could definitely communicate them better and add more written work to support it, help tell the story and tell people how I feel. i remember at the beginning of part 3 I was on a roll and my aim was to do 4-6 pieces of research 4 times a week which I did actually do, it was also a wide range of research such as documentary, music and books, I wish I was able to continue that as it would have widened my knowledge completely.
