Subject: Cancer

Aim: to document my family whilst my aunt has cancer

Medium: photography

Impact: managed to produce a large body of work that stretched over 5 months - continuing. Is now featured in two exhibitions. One that is solo.

Threshold concept: the relationship between the work and from start to end was cohesive and worked well, form the art styles to the titles, everything went well.

How did the touches connect with your own concerns?

The project theme connected with my own concerns as cancer is something that is prevalent in my family and so being able to connect with it gently felt like closure in a way as I never really get to process loss anymore in my family as I’m so used to it now. This print felt very thinking in a way

What was the context of the work and why was this exciting to you?

The context of my work was revolving my little cousins and photographing them over summer whilst their mother underwent chemotherapy. One thing that excited me was the fact that I created a unique art style out of this, and it’s something that I’m now recognised for as an artist. “Signature style” if you must”.

What process did you explore at each stage of the project?

I went from photographing them over many days and then deciding which ones to edit. I didn’t know how I would edit them so I’d take my time. I’d create high contrast, to my copper skin effect.

How did this project make a turning point in your approach to thinking?

It allowed me to figure out how to juxtapose a dark melancholy moment and depict it into a warm movement. I’ve been able to channel character and emotion though my art this way.

Speculate

The implications that my part 2 project work will have one the future could be one of procuring art in hard time that uplift communities. Almost go as far as to say you forget In the moment that you were struggling with your suffering.

Creating a universal body of work (photography) which references texts, media’s and fine art in a literal sense but also from a perspective sense.

A project for and only for dark skin black women using texts that reference them, whether it be Nina Simone or a movie from the 21st century or a painting from Kerry James.

Documenting people that live in council estates as they’re always negative connotations to living in them. It’s a relatable theme to me as I’ve lived in one and live it so much. It’d be nice to be the one to be behind the camera capturing positivity behind these estates.

What is the aim

I’m interested in this as these things are all something that I do show interest in and want to show more interest in as well as learn about them but I never get the chance but now I can. Women of colour in the media still don’t get real representation like true true representation , and i want to be the one to show them as they truly are.

What materials and processes might be involved in achieving my aim?

Photography and experimental work. Also i feel that because my photography is edited i may go easy on that a bit in order to tell a more fluid story. Sometimes less is truly more.

What is the intended impact? What do I hope the project will achieve?

I’d like to think a sense of a stronger bond in community and a better feeling of being a black woman as some have lesser confidence than others due to colourism, stereotypes and racism .
